Our take

Altmetric exposes research-attention data through both a hosted OAuth MCP server and a local npm server for API-key users. It is useful when an agent needs DOI, PubMed, arXiv, Explorer, or Details Page lookups, with entitlement-dependent tools and some paid API surfaces. The local installer script can write Claude Desktop config, but it is a user-run helper rather than an npm postinstall.
