Our take

Official Automattic server for Simplenote, and a model of sane scoping: on macOS it reads the desktop app's local Core Data store fully offline with zero auth, elsewhere it uses the Simperium API after a one-time setup, and write tools (create, trash, restore) are strictly opt-in. Small and honest about what it is. Minor note: it ships Automattic's tracks telemetry library as a dependency.
